The Richmond Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association (VTAA) has selected their 2010 Scholarship recipients. Five outstanding high school seniors who displayed remarkable academic achievement, extra-curricular participation, and community service will each be awarded a $2,000 scholarship to support their collegiate education at Virginia Tech.

Funded by a select number of VTAA Richmond Chapter hosted/sponsored events, the annual scholarships are awarded to students from the Richmond metropolitan area including the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent, and Charles City. This year 87 applications (45 Legacy) were initially considered and 24 eventually reviewed by the full Scholarship Committee. It may be important for readers to know that besides the standard information requested, one of the three essay questions asked respondents to match their chosen major or area of interest to the university’s motto of “Ut Prosim” (“That I May Serve”).

On behalf of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Richmond Chapter, we would like to recognize our five scholarship recipients for 2010:

Hasan Afzal is a senior at Deep Run High School and will pursue a degree in computer science engineering. He was co-captain of the debate team, member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society), and in the past volunteered at the Science Museum of Virginia. His brother graduated from Virginia Tech.

Quinn Brogan is a senior at Mills E. Godwin High School and will pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. She was inducted in the math honor society, received an award in the Botany category at the 2008 Metro-Richmond Science Fair, and in the past volunteered at BARK (a local animal shelter).

McKenna Creasey is a senior at Cosby High School and will major in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. She was a member of several honor societies, on the Cosby Dance Team, and volunteered at her high school’s Health Science Specialty Center. Her brother currently attends Virginia Tech.

Eric Estes is a senior at Cosby High School and will pursue an engineering degree. He was an officer in Mu Alpha Theta, a Show Choir leader, and on the varsity tennis team.

Margaret-Katherine Jeter is a senior at New Kent High School and will major in Animal & Poultry Sciences. She was Vice President of the Beta Club and found statewide recognition with the Scholastic Bowl Team as Co-Captain. Her father is a graduate of Virginia Tech and her brother currently attends Virginia Tech.

Samantha Stephenson-
Richmond Chapter scholarship recipient

Samantha Stephenson, who is studying architecture, applied to Virginia Tech because of its top-ranked architecture program. Once she was accepted, she says, she was excited to be part of such a beautiful campus and to share the pride that comes along with being a student.

“I was happy to learn through an awards assembly at Hermitage High School that I had won [the scholarship],” she says. “Now at Tech, what I find most challenging is the architecture design lab. It’s interesting to see other students’ ideas since most assignments are open to interpretation.”
