The Big Event 2010 is Virginia Tech’s largest community service project. The projects completed by students, faculty, and staff are not based on needs or socioeconomic status; instead it is a way for the students to say “Thank You” to the members of the surrounding community without preconditions. Through The Big Event, they aim to strengthen the relationship between Virginia Tech and the communities we impact throughout the year.

The event is held annually during the spring semester. On their one big Saturday (April 17, 2010) volunteers will head out into the community and complete hundreds of projects. They provide all of the tools, supplies and the entire workforce required for each project, free of charge. The 2009 Big Event saw over 5,700 students complete over 740 community service projects throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg and the New River Valley. The Big Event has been in existence at Virginia Tech since 2002 and has grown every year since coming to Tech’s campus. This year organizers are expecting around 7,000 students to complete over 1,000 service projects throughout the community.

In addition to expanding their own event, they have begun to focus on expanding The Big Event nationally. Organizers have created The Big Event Association, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization with the sole purpose to expand, promote and fundraise for The Big Event across the country. They hope that this organization will eventually serve as a unifying organization for universities across the country and encourage them to come together to better The Big Event and to expand it to other areas as well as provide a benefit to their donors and sponsors.

As can be seen, The Big Event at Virginia Tech is a great project. They are expecting The 2010 Big Event to be the best Tech has ever seen. In order to allow this project to meet its potential, organizers are partnering with local government, businesses, and other organizations to create a network that will improve The Big Event. Whether you are a local business, resident or organization The Big Event is looking for ways to partner with you to improve this event and to better the impact it has on the community.

The Big Event is looking for any sort of help, whether it is through sponsorships, donations, ideas or project requests, they would appreciate any contributions. Please feel free to contact them for further information.
